"There is a road, no simple highway; Between the dawn and the dark of night
And if you go, no one may follow; That path is for your steps alone
Ripple in still water; When there is no pebble tossed
Nor wind to blow
You who choose to lead must follow; But if you fall, you fall alone
If you should stand, then who's to guide you?
If I knew the way I would take you home"- Grateful Dead
"The final score.... Drugs 1, Adam 0. I questioned starting off this way, but that's why we are here today isn't it? Adam lost his battle with drugs and depression. Nothing to sugar coat. And it stinks. I would not wish this on any family, but unfortunately there were so many before us, and there will be others tomorrow and the day after. I want to talk about 2 Adams today... Adam A and Adam B. As I look around, the people here today were all
part of Adam A's life. The adventurous little kid that was always getting into something new. Adam was never into sports, but found his passion in Scouts. Boy Scouts was a huge part of his life and took him on so many adventures including working at Broad
Creek for 2 summers. In high school when he turned 16 he joined Providence Volunteer Fire Department, he lived and breathed that place. He was never home. Where's Adam... At the fire house. Where's Adam... At the fire house. This lead to his next adventure
which was to join the Marines. He made it thru boot camp but soon after was medically discharged. Which led him back to the firehouse and a little school. He became an EMT and took a few classes here and there and earned certificates to further his career.
He Graduated from the fire academy and eventually got a job for Baltimore City. He even went to California to fight the wild fires in his late 20s. He loved being outside. He loved helping people. Things were going great. He had a promising career and
a whole big future lay ahead of him. Then the path abruptly changed. It became dark and overgrown. I look around and I don't see anyone from Adam Bs life, except a silent killer. That path was long and difficult for Adam. Almost 8 years. It was difficult
for us all to watch. The one person though who never gave up on him was our mom. Mom you can fix anything we bring to you. I am so sorry that you could not fix Adam. He was just too broken. I know he loved you and he is holding you right now. Adam, I
promise you I will be your voice and the voice of so many others who have been taken too soon from this earth from drug addiction and mental illness. They go hand in hand. I promise that I will fight for the next family to not be sitting here today. I don't
know how, but i will continue to pray about God giving me guidance. Adam was a great kid with a lot of wonderful attributes who always wanted to make others happy. What Adam do I want you to remember.... Both. What Adam do I want you to talk about... Both.
We need to talk about it.... The good and the bad. We need to bring attention to this crisis. We need to scream shout and holler. What ever it takes. Promise me when you leave here today and you go about your life tomorrow that you will take a stand with
me. We will conquer this together in Adams name. Adam I love you. Always have and always will. Your light will continue to shine, I promise. You are whole now. And I pray you have found your peace . Adam's light...Forever 39. "
We must end the stigma surrounding addiction. Our loved ones addiction did not define who they were. I promised Adam that we would fight this battle. Adam's Light is my mission now to let other families and those struggling know they are not alone.
